Mahindra Thar electric to make global debut on August 15

The brand’s mega event in South Africa will see multiple models from its future being showcased

Mahindra Automotive will reveal the Thar.e electric SUV at its event in Cape Town, South Africa on August 15. This was confirmed by a teaser from the brand on its social media handles. This essentially means that the brand will not be revealing the hotly anticipated Thar 5-door at the event, as earlier speculated. The Thar 5-door will be revealed by the brand next year.

The teaser confirms that the electric Thar will be called the Thar.e, and will be based on the Born Electric platform that was unveiled earlier by the brand. The Born Electric platform is set to underpin the upcoming EVs from Mahindra including the XUV.e8 which is the electric version of the XUV700. The platform also means that the Thar.e will not use the ladder frame chassis which has long been associated with the off-road SUV, but rather a modular one to accommodate the battery and the electric powertrain.

While not much of the design is revealed in the teaser, it does show the taillamps which follow a similar design to the square-ish ones found on the Thar. These feature LED tech. The rest of the car will be revealed subsequently, but the design is expected to follow the overall aesthetic of the Thar. However, it is not known if the Thar.e will make its debut as a three-door version or a bigger 5-door version.

Mahindra has not revealed any other details about the Thar electric, including the powertrain. But as it is based on the Born Electric platform, the SUV may have a double motor setup with the output running from 335bhp to 390bhp.

The company will also reveal the Z121 – Scorpio-N based pickup at the event on August 15. This has also been teased by the brand, the pickup is a popular type of model in South Africa where they’re called bakkies, and Mahindra has been for some time selling the Mahindra Scorpio Pickup/Getaway in the country. This is expected to be mechanically the same as the Scorpio-N sold in India.
