The most powerful car to ever bear the Hyundai badge, with 650bhp on tap in boost mode
Hyundai has revealed the Ioniq 5 N at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This is the brand’s first high performance EV and a precursor to many more electrified performance cars from the Hyundai N brand. This is incidentally the most powerful car to ever bear the Hyundai badge, with 650bhp on tap in boost mode.

Now the Hyundai Ioniq 5 itself is a very handsome car, but the Ioniq 5 N has taken the unique neo-retro design to a completely new level. This is courtesy of the performance enhancing body parts such as the rear spoiler, front flap, 21-inch forged wheels, and more body elements. The changes have rendered the Ioniq 5 N 20mm lower, 50mm wider and 80mm longer compared to the standard car. Interestingly, this is the only Ioniq 5 variant to be available with a rear windshield wiper.

The cabin too has been revamped for the performance car. This features a sportier colour scheme with a lot of red accents and N branding. There is a new steering wheel, with paddles, each of which can be customised to execute a particular function. The central console comes with knee pads and shin support. The seats are beefier with side bolsters, to keep the occupants in place while the Ioniq 5 N executes high-performance manoeuvres, and are set 20mm lower for an optimised driving position. The pedals have been made specifically for track use, and are positioned in a manner to avoid foot slippage while being used in two-foot driving scenarios.
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Performance and powertrain
The Ioniq 5 N is based on three pillars of N Performance – Corner Rascal, Racetrack capability and everyday sports car. The body and the chassis are both stiffer and provide a superior torsional rigidity and direct steering feel. The car is even capable of dual-motor AWD cornering as seen in rally cars. This isn’t all, the N also gets a host of features to make it drivable as a daily car such as N Battery Preconditioning, N Race, N Pedal, N Brake Regen, N Drift Optimizer, N Torque Distribution, N Launch Control, N Grin Boost, and more.
Powering the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N are two electric motors which can spin at 21,000rpm and produce 609bhp. These are placed at either axles giving the caar AWD capability. However, engaging the N Grin Boost mode pushes the power to 650bhp, in which mode the car can launch from 0 to 100kmph in just 3.4 seconds and to a top speed of 260kmph. The car also comes armed with the most advanced heat-induced power degradation resistance, which means that the car does not drain its battery when operated in high performance mode.
It comes with a larger 84kWh battery pack which comes with improved charge holding capabilities. While the battery is big, it isn’t exactly meant for efficiency and the range should fall in the category of 350-400km on a single charge.
