Hyundai Exter vs Punch vs Ignis vs Kiger vs Magnite vs C3 – spec comparison

Hyundai Exter, Tata Punch the current segment leader, Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite and Citroen C3 all comes in same price bracket. So we did a spec comparison for the buyers as a hand guide

With Hyundai launching the Exter in India, comparisons have immediately been drawn between the Exter and the Tata Punch which has since 2021 been the absolute leader in the micro-SUV segment. The Punch has regularly clocked over 10,000 units per month in sales, making it not only one of the highest selling SUVs in India but also one of the highest selling models every month. But the Punch isn’t the only rival that the Exter has to compete with as it will indirectly compete with the Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, Citroen C3 and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis which fall in similar price brackets. Here is a specification comparison between these cars.

Now the Exter measures 3,815mm long, 1,710mm wide and 1,631mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,450mm. In comparison, the Tata Punch is 3,827mm long, Citroen C3 is 3,981mm long, Nissan Magnite is 3,994mm long, Renault Kiger is 3,991mm long while the Ignis is 3,700mm long, which means that the Exter isn’t the longest in the segment. The wheelbase is longer than the Tata’s which stands at 2,445mm, but all other cars in the category except the Ignis have a longer wheelbase. While the width isn’t the best in segment, the height is in fact the best in segment at 1,631mm reiterating the fact that the Exter has been designed out and out as an SUV.

Exter vs Punch vs Ignis vs Kiger vs Magnite vs C3 : Engine and transmission 

Hyundai is offering the Exter with a single engine option which is a 1.2L four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol which makes 83bhp and 113.8Nm of torque. This is offered with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. There is a CNG version of the same engine as well, which makes 69bhp and 95.2Nm of torque. Amongst its competition, the Tata Punch is available with a 1.2L 3-cylinder, the C3 is available with a 1.2L NA and a 1.2L turbo, where the former gets a 5-speed manual while the latter gets a 6-speed manual. 

Both the Renault Kiger and the Nissan Magnite are available with two engine options –  a 1.0L naturally aspirated motor and a 1.0L Turbo, where the naturally aspirated engine is available with a manual and AMT gearbox while the Turbo can be paired with a CVT in addition to a manual. The Ignis gets a 1.2L NA engine which is paired to a manual or an AMT.

Every year, a new car or an update pushes the boundaries of features that are offered in a particular segment, and that is exactly what the Hyundai Exter is. It comes loaded with comfort and convenience features, many of which are segment first. This includes the voice assisted sunroof, footwell lighting and the dashboard camera with dual lens (front & rear). In its top-spec SX (O) Connect trim, the Exter features an 8in high-definition infotainment system with Bluelink, while all other variants get an 8in system without the Bluelink connectivity. It also gets a digital instrument cluster, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, paddle shifters, wireless smartphone charger, cruise control, automatic climate control, electrically folding ORVM, Type-C ports and cooled glove box to name a few. The competition in this case is also quite well specced when it comes to features, so lets have a look at some of them.

In terms of pricing, the Hyundai Exter starts at Rs 5.99 lakh and this is also the price point from which the Tata Punch and the Nissan Magnite range starts. The starting price for the Renault Kiger is Rs 6.49 lakh, while the Citroen C3 is Rs 6.16 lakh. Maruti Suzuki’s Ignis has the lowest starting price at Rs 5.84 lakh. However, the prices for the Hyundai Exter are currently under an introductory scheme and will be increased after a certain period.
