Toyota is all set to launch the Rumion MPV

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga-based MPV is another cross-badged product to be launched, Toyota Rumion is already on sale in South Africa, India-spec model may differ

The Maruti Suzuki – Toyota partnership is ready to spawn its latest creation in the form of the Ertiga-based Rumion. Just a few days after the launch of the Maruti Suzuki Invicto (another cross-badged product), news reports have confirmed that the Rumion which is sold in South Africa will make its India debut. The India-spec model too like the one sold abroad will be built by Maruti Suzuki for Toyota.

Toyota Rumion is not a new car as it made its debut in 2021. This will however solidify Toyota’s presence as an MPV brand with models such as the Vellfire, Hycross and Crysta in its portfolio. Visually the Toyota Rumion is a copy of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga except for some changes to the grille, alloys and logos. The cabin does get an all black interior, which is different to the beige one offered with the Ertiga.

Expect the Indian-spec Rumion to feature more similarities to the Ertiga. Especially in terms of the features such as four airbags, 17.78cm infotainment display, 2nd and 3rd row recliner seats, roof mounted aircon etc.

Similar to other products of the Toyota and Maruti Suzuki partnerships, the Rumion too will mimic the Ertiga mechanically. This means that it will come with a 1.5-litre petrol engine which makes 103bhp and 137Nm of torque. This will be mated to a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The Rumion may also be offered with a CNG powertrain.

The Rumion is the second product supplied by Maruti Suzuki for Toyota in India after the Glanza. Overseas though, the supply runs deeper with models such as the Ciaz, Celerio and Baleno which are sold with Toyota badging. Meanwhile, Toyota manufactures the Grand Vitara at its facility along with the Urban Cruiser Hyryder.

Prices will be very close to the Ertiga, which means it will start at Rs 8.75 lakh for the base variant and go up to Rs 13 lakh (prices ex-showroom)

India-spec model may differ
